A Cookie Policy is an important part of your online store’s legal setup. It informs your customers about the cookies used on your website, how they’re used, and how users can manage their cookie preferences. If you’re using the Complianz app for Shopify, setting up a Cookie Policy is easy, and in this guide, we will walk you through the process step-by-step.
Why Do You Need a Cookie Policy?
A Cookie Policy is required by law in many regions, such as the European Union (EU), to ensure transparency about the data your website collects and how it is used. Cookies can store information about visitors, such as browsing preferences, and other data that enhances the online experience.
With Complianz for Shopify, generating and setting up your Cookie Policy is simple and helps your store stay compliant. Let’s dive into the steps to set it up.
How to Set Up Your Cookie Policy
Step 1: Set Up the Complianz App and Run the Scanner
Before creating your Cookie Policy, you first need to set up the Complianz app on your Shopify store. Follow these steps:
- Install the Complianz app from the Shopify app store if you haven’t already.
- After installation, navigate to the Cookie Policy menu in the app’s dashboard.
- Run the cookie scanner. This tool will automatically scan your website to identify which cookies are being used.
The scanner will compile a list of all the cookies present on your website. Once this process is complete, you’ll have a list of services (such as Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, etc.) that are using cookies on your site.
Step 2: View and Copy Your Cookie Policy HTML
Once the scanner has completed its job and the Services list is visible:
- Click on View Cookie Policy. This will open the generated Cookie Policy for your store.
- From the page, click on Copy HTML. This will copy the HTML code of your Cookie Policy, which you will need to add to your Shopify store.
Step 3: Create a New Page in Your Shopify Store
Now that you’ve copied the HTML code for your Cookie Policy, it’s time to create a page on your Shopify store to display it.
- In your Shopify dashboard, go to Online Store > Pages.
- Click on Add page to create a new page.
- Name the page anything you like, but we recommend naming it ‘Cookie Policy’ so customers can easily find it.
- Once you’re on the new page, click on the </> symbol in the page editor. This is where you can add HTML code.
- Paste the copied HTML code for your Cookie Policy into this area.
- Save your changes.
Finally, set the page status to “visible” to make the page public.
Important Note:
If you decide to name your page something other than “Cookie Policy”, it’s important to update the link in the Complianz app to reflect this change.
- In the Complianz app, go to Banner-editor > Text.
- Adjust the Cookie Policy link to match the name of the page you created. This ensures that the banner that shows up on your site will direct customers to the correct page.
Now you’re ready to complete the setup and make your store compliant with ease. If you run into any issues or have questions, the Complianz support team is always available to help!
